Reflections and resolutions

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

What? It’s New Year’s Eve and it’s practically required that a blog posted today should revolve around reflections and resolutions.

Reflections for 2009:

  • I stuck with an exercise program for an entire year for the first time in my life! I began in November 2008, stuck with it through 2009 and even worked out this morning.
  • I found traces of my calf and tricep muscles! No kidding! Who knew?!
  • I started the Couch to 5k running program and have stayed on schedule. I’ll finish week 3 on New Year’s Day at the first race of the year in Phoenix.
  • I made significant strides at work and was rewarded for my efforts with a promotion!
  • We went on two trips back East to visit my family. We saw my Grandmother for the first time in 6 years.
  • I communicated more often with some of the people I love and fostered deepened relationships with them. I need to keep this up because it’s just awesome to get to know these people better.
  • I went on my first yoga retreat!

Reflections for the decade:

  • I got engaged! (and married!) (and my in-laws are AWESOME!!)
  • I left my first “real” job and learned how to get another one. And another one. And another … ahem, well … :-)
  • I graduated with my BA
  • We lost my Dad in 2003. This was completely devastating at the time, but almost 7 years later, I think of him often and smile at the man he was and the woman he continues to inspire me to be.
  • We lost the first cat I “owned” (she totally owned me) 2 months after Dad. This was also earth shattering, but I have lots of good memories of her. We have 4 kitties who keep us plenty busy.
  • I became an expert at several things I previously hadn’t even had a cursory understanding of.
  • I began and successfully completed my MA
  • I stayed mostly in my chosen industry for work, but moved around a bit and finally feel like I’m “home”
  • Hubby got a fabulous new job and left his not fabulous job to move us to Phoenix!
  • I walked over 800 miles and raised over $25,000 for breast cancer causes. I met hundreds of incredible people along the way, many of whom are still friends.
  • I made a commitment to myself, my friends, and everyone who loves me to really take care of myself. This “healthy living” thing is contagious with those around me and THAT is exciting.

Resolutions:

I don’t do well with resolutions. I do better with goals. Maybe it’s just semantics …

  • to finish Couch to 5k and run the entirety of at least one 5k before the end of March 2010.
  • to continue practicing yoga once a week
  • to try at least 3 new recipes per week between now and the end of February
  • beef up that savings account
  • frame and hang photos we’ve taken around our home. We love to travel and have been to some amazing places. Now it’s time to put those memories somewhere easier to access than the depths of our hard drive.
  • date my husband more often. Less of the “do you just want to go get something to eat?” and more of the “let’s spend an evening/afternoon/weekend being actually together,” not just doing our own thing in the same room.

Best wishes to all for a fabulous New Year’s Eve, weekend, 2010, and coming decade!!

A month of thanks - day 27

I’ve been thinking a lot about our home. There are so many things that make a house (or apartment, or condo) a home. As far as the building itself goes, there are a lot of things to be grateful for in that arena.

  • We have a home.
  • We can afford the payments.
  • It’s secure enough.
  • It’s warm/cool enough.

As for the home part of the building, our home is filled with love, laughter, the smell of (Jon’s) good cooking, the sounds of his amazing piano playing, plenty of clothes and shoes and blankets to keep us warm, photographs and stories to remind us of fun trips, family and friends we don’t get to see often enough, books to keep us occupied, computers to keep us in contact with everyone, enough food to keep us nourished (or pigging out!).

We live in this home every day, keeping track of various parts of our lives, as well as others. We currently share our home with O’Kerri and she adds laughter, fun, conversation, and love. Four of our home’s permanent residents are 4 of the cutest little furballs I’ve ever seen!

Today’s gratitude goes out to the boys! (one of whom is insisting I must share the chair with him, one is under the covers on the bed, and the other 2 are cuddled together on the other office chair.)

Broken glass

In Lima, I bought a coffee mug to send to my “stepmom” (I hate that word!) in Colorado. It’s really pretty with a picture of Machu Picchu on the outside and the handle is made to feel like the stones. It’s not a piece of fine art, but it’s pretty and I wanted her to know I was thinking of her from Peru.

I hate mailing things. There’s something about putting something in a box and going to the post office that I just don’t enjoy. So I’ve put off mailing this mug.

It’s been wrapped in newspaper and in a plastic bag (i KNOW - I don’t use plastic bags at home, but in Peru, that’s what they use!!!) and sitting with several other things that I haven’t put away from the trip. This morning, I heard The Nerd (Merlin the Nerd) fussing around with plastic and when I got up to see what he was doing, he freaked out and ran - with the plastic bag handle around him. It wasn’t tight; he wasn’t in danger of suffocating or anything like that, the handle was just stuck around his furry little belly. And he ran across the hard tile floor in the house, bouncing the coffee mug along with him.

So the coffee mug is now in pieces. I can’t be mad at The Nerd because he’s a silly cat and he was just playing. I’m the moron who hadn’t sent the mug yet or put it someplace safer and out of kitty reach. So I’m annoyed with myself. I might mail it anyway just so she can see the pretty picture and know I was thinking of her. I wonder if I could glue it enough that she’d get the idea … hm. She reads this blog.

I’m sorry your mug broke before I could send it! We thought of you in Peru; I promise!!
